Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club To Hold Wild Game Feed

Thu 1-10-2019

(Royal)-- The Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club will hold a wild game feed this Saturday evening at Haggy's in Royal. Club President Terry Thompson says the doors will open that evening at 6:00 pm and that the public is urged to attend...Wild Game Feed01

"The Wild Game Feed is a fundraiser for our club to help raise money for the Jim McDonnell Scholarship. Jim was a former President of the club who passed away almost seven years ago now, so we established this scholarship in order to honor his memory and it's a $500 scholarship, or it could be several $500 scholarships. They're pretty easy to apply for and a student has to be going into the conservation or environmental field. That's our only prerequisite."

In addition to the feed, Thompson says they'll also be raffling off some prizes...Wild Game Feed02

"Kelly McDonnell, Jim's daughter who works for Ron Schara Productions was able to secure a weekend at Chase On The Lake at Leech Lake at Walker, Minnesota. That's kind of the grand prize that will be offered at a silent auction, and there will be various fishing equipment including ammo, just a lot of items."

Dean Jacobson, Treasurer of the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club, says the main intent of the organization is to promote fishing among young people...Wild Game Feed03

"Every May, the first Wednesday in May, this year May 1st, we have the kid's fishing clinic out at Stolley's Pit  here in town. Last year we had 100-110 kids out there, and educating those kids not just having them go fishing but having a fish cleaning station, a knot tying station, the DNR comes out and talks about safety and fish identification and rules. And of course we do let them fish for an hour, hour and-a-half and then we feed them when they're done and send them home with a t-shirt and some fishing tackle. But the whole thing is set up to encourage children to get involved in fishing."

Admission to Saturday evening's wild game feed is by freewill donation.
