(Estherville)-- An investigation continues into the death of an inmate at the Emmet county jail. Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens says 51-year-old Lee Roy Hum of Estherville was found unresponsive in his jail cell shortly after 8:00 a.m. Friday. He says jail staff attempted to administer first aid, but he says those efforts were unsuccessful as Hum was pronounced dead a short time later at Avera Holy Family Hospital.
Authorities say Hum had been booked into the Emmet county jail on Wednesday of last week on an outstanding warrant.
Martens says an autopsy conducted later in the day Friday by the State Medical Examiner’s office revealed no significant injury. Martens says their awaiting additional laboratory test results before giving an official cause and manner of Hum’s death.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is also involved.
