(Spirit Lake)-- A recent report details the economic impact of local hospitals.

The report by the Iowa Hospital Association shows Lakes Regional Healthcare generates 487 jobs adding about $18.3 million to Dickinson county's economy with employees spending $6 million on retail sales, contributing $364,000 in state sales tax revenue.

The study examined the jobs, income, retail sales and sales tax produced by hospitals and the rest of the state's healthcare sector.

Statewide the study shows Iowa hospitals directly employ 74,691 people and create another 57,586 jobs outside the hospital sector, providing $4.8 billion in salaries and benefits with another $2.3 billion through other jobs that depend on hospitals. The report says Iowa's healthcare sector contributes $17 billion to the state economy while directly and indirectly providing more than 330,000 jobs, or 20 percent of the state's total non-farm employment.

Officials with the Iowa Hospital Association say they're concerned possible cuts to Medicaid and Medicare could put that at risk.
