(Spencer)-- Serious injuries were reported in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday evening on Highway 18 in Clay county.

The Sheriff's Office says 27-year-old Lucio Pena of Spencer was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound. Authorities say Pena lost control of the ice covered road and that the vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2009 Dodge Ram driven by 21-year-old Zachary Petersen of Milford.

Petersen and a passenger in his vehicle were taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. Pena and a passenger in his vehicle were also taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital and were transferred by air to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A child passenger in Pena's vehicle was believed to be uninjured and was later released to family members.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Authorities say charges are pending in connection with the crash, which took place shortly after 7:00 pm.
