Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar to focus on River Otter Telemetry Project July 9
(Okoboji)-Tuesday's Lakeside Lab Speaker will focus on tracking Otters across the State of Iowa, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Friends of Lakeside Lab's Science Seminar on Tuesday evening will feature at talk by Vince Evelsizer, Furbearer and Wetland Biologist with the Iowa DNR.
Evelsizer says the DNR has been tracking otters by using transmitters. "For the past year we've been tracking otters using VHF radio telemetry, which is equipment where a transmitter is place inside the otter's body, and then we track that animal with that transmitter using different types of antennas and receivers that basically picks up a unique signal for each transmitter."
He says the research is being done in conjunction with Iowa State University. "We want to know how many otters are being harvested legally, mainly by trapping, out of this batch that we have transmittered. How many others die from other causes such as road kills or disease or anything like that. It helps to complement the population estimation modeling that we're doing with Iowa State University."
Evelsizer will speak at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory.
The talk is free and open to the public.
