Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar on Restoration of Black Hawk Lake July 31

The Lakeside Science Seminar Series on Tuesday evening will focus on the restoration of Black Hawk Lake.

Featured Speaker Ben Wallace is a Fish Management Biologist with the Iowa DNR.  "One of the big things we did at Black Hawk about 6 years ago, and this will be kind of the focus of my presentation, is, we killed off all the fish and started over.  We had a lot of rough fish in our lake, and when I say rough fish I mean common carp, big mouth buffalo, gizzard shad, and all these fish were driving poor water quality as well.  So we nutirents coming into the lake, but we also had fish in our lake that were recycling those nutrients and helping to drive algae blooms, and so we killed the lake off, restocked it with sport fish, native fishes that we want to see in there, and that's really helped improve the water clarity.  We're not going to do that in every lake system.  So, it just depends.  We're going to go in, figure out what's going on in these lakes and come up with a prescription on how to turn them around, and it's going to be on a case by case basis."

The Lakeside Science Seminar will begin at 7 pm Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Campus. It is free and open to the public.
