(Spencer)-- A Spencer playground has been heavily damaged by fireworks.

Authorities say the playground at Fairview Elementary School sustained an estimated $15,000 in damage after juveniles lit fireworks in the playground. It happened around 2:30 in the morning Sunday. The Spencer Fire Department was called to the scene a few minutes later. Fire Chief John Conyn says spent fireworks were found and a portion of the playground was on fire.

Spencer police say the incident is under investigation and that they're reviewing video from security cameras.

It is illegal in a number of area cities, including Spencer, to shoot off fireworks even though they can be purchased legally.

In Spirit Lake "consumer fireworks" can be shot off between 11:00 am and 10:00 pm July 3rd and 4th ONLY and are allowed only on private property with permission of the property owner. Use of fireworks on public property, including streets, parks and rights-of-way, is prohibited.
