(Okoboji)-Registration is required for the free Family Nature Night at the Dickinson County Nature Center next week, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Dickinson County Nature Center will hold their monthly Family Nature Night on April 23.
Environmental Education Coordinator Bryanna Kuhlman says the program will focus on prairie fires and controlled burns. "We'll be talking about the positive effects that wildland and prescribed fire can have on ecosystems. In the spring and fall of the year, a lot of people who have prairie are burning, so we thought that instead of just seeing the smoke overhead and not knowing what's going on, we'll familiarize people with tools and techniques of the trade, and then we're hopeful that maybe the weather will be nice where we could potentially even light a small prescribed fire so that people can see how wildland burn technicians light the fire using a drip torch and how they keep the fire from spreading. That is, if weather allows, but people will still be to come, enjoy and learn and get some hands-on experiences with some of the watering tools that they use."
She notes that the program is free, however registration is required. "We're going to do a 5 and a 7 o'clock program, so they can just call the front desk of the Nature Center and get signed up. What we want to know is your name, number of people in your party and then if you want to do the 5 or the 7 o'clock program."
