Fire Makes Pikes Point Shelter House Off Limits Until Further Notice
(Okoboji)-- Fire this (Sunday) evening caused extensive damage to the shelter house at Pikes Point State Park on West Lake Okoboji.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 7:45 pm. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news visible flames were coming from the roof when they arrived...
"The roof is shake shingle so it had a pretty good start. Any idea on what caused it? We don't know for sure but we do have a grill that was hot, so we're just assuming that something blew out of the grill up onto the shakes."
Daly says no one was in the shelter house when firefighters arrived. He says the fire was contained to the roof of the shelter house...
"Mostly just to the shake shingles, it looks like. It doesn't look like anything came through on the inside."
Daly adds they initially called for mutual assistance as a precaution...
"I did have the fire boat from Arnolds Park-Okoboji come just in case. I didn't know exactly what I had and we have endless water right out there so we just brought them along and fortunately we knocked it right down and got it out of there."
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say the shelter house at Pikes Point will remain closed until the roof can be re-shingled. It isn't certain when that may take place.
