Fire Completely Destroys Spirit Lake Business; Damages A Neighboring One
(Spirit Lake)-- A large fire has destroyed one Spirit Lake business and damaged another.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news they were called to the Golden Buys Outlet store at 1665 Highway 71 South a little before 8:30 this (Friday) morning...
"We got paged out about 8:26. It started out as being a controlled burn that got out of control and shortly after that we were paged for a structure fire, and it has, the whole building is totally gone. Were there people inside the building at the time that you're aware of? The workers that were in there for the shop that's in there. They were able to get out? They, everybody was out. We ended up calling Arnolds Park-Okoboji, Milford, and Superior to come help us."
Daly says an excavator was brought in to knock down portions of what was left of the building...
"When that roofs fall down then it buries everything but it doesn't put it out, so we have to go in there and tear it apart and see what we can do to get it put out."
Daly says it's fortunate the wind at the time was out of the north, or it likely would have been much worse. They way it is, he says there was damage to at least one of the green houses at Ferguson's Garden and Landscape Center.
An ambulance from Lakes Regional Healthcare was also on the scene for awhile as a precaution. Again, no injuries were reported.
Highway 71 remained closed early Friday afternoon between 34th and 41st Streets in Spirit Lake.
Daly thanks those who brought food and water to the scene for firefighters.
