Federal Judge Rules Against State Law That Made It Illegal For Schools To Require Masks
(Des Moines)-- A federal judge today (Monday) ruled against a state law that prevented Iowa school districts from issuing mask mandates. In his order, Judge Robert Pratt says the state must immediately stop enforcement of the law.
Judge Pratt states in the ruling that the law substantially increases the risk of children with underlying health conditions of getting COVID-19. Pratt goes on to say he reviewed data on the effectiveness of masks to reduce the spread of the virus and agrees with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Governor Kim Reynolds late this (Monday) afternoon said she plans to appeal. She referred to the judge's ruling as being unilateral, adding it "ignored the decision by our elected officials legislature and took away parents' ability to decide what's best for their child."
Several parents of children with underlying medical conditions sued the state over the law.
