(Spirit Lake)-- An endowment has been put into place at Camp Foster YMCA honoring the memory of long-time lakes area resident, businessman and philanthropist John Hinn who passed away in February. Josh Carr of Camp Foster YMCA says in lieu of flowers or gifts to the family, John's request was that people give to Camp Foster to help support scholarships for campers...Camp Foster Endowment01

"The family set up an endowment to basically pay a scholarship each year for a kid to come to camp. Some families are not able to afford to come to camp so they graciously set that up in his name and it's set up in perpetuity so year after year it will continue to create that scholarship."

Hinn was named 2020 Citizen of the Years by the Spirit Lake Noon Kiwanis. Carr says helping children was one of John's and his wife Kathi's, highest priorities...Camp Foster Endowment02

"They've always taken care of kids at Camp Foster and they've been donors with us for many years and they wanted to make sure they had a lasting gift."

And when it comes to the upcoming season at Camp Foster, Carr says it's going to be an extremely busy one...Camp Foster Endowment03

"Well we're full for our day camp and we're filling up quickly with our overnight camp. A lot of people have signed up and they have a lot of questions, and some of those questions are also coming back to what are some of our safety protocols and what are some of our practices. We're to a point now where we want to put a plan in place because things have changed dramatically from week to week there for awhile, and so we're kind of holding with what we've got and now we're going to move forward with a plan and we're going to get that stuff public and ready to share with our parents and families as soon as that's done and reviewed."

The pandemic severely curtailed operations at Camp Foster in 2020.
