Emmetsburg Man Accused In Death Of A Washington, Iowa Man To Go On Trial In March, 2021
(Emmetsburg)-- An Emmetsburg man charged in the death of a Washington, Iowa man will go on trial March 9th in Palo Alto County District Court.
29-year-old Allan Schwidder is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Rollin Bontrager. Schwidder is accused of killing Bontrager with a pair of bolt cutters. Bontrager's body was found by authorities on July 22nd in Virgin Lake near Ruthven.
According to a criminal complaint filed on August 14, Dr. Dennis Klein, who performed the autopsy at the State Medical Examiner's office in Ankeny, Iowa, determined Bontrager suffered multiple lacerations on the head consistent with being beaten with a bolt cutter tool.
Court documents claim multiple witnesses place Schwidder at the lake on July 19th. The documents also refer to surveillance video showing Bontrager alive shortly before 2:30 p.m. that day, and that he was last seen alive with Schwidder earlier that day.
The same documents claim Schwidder admitted to multiple people that same night he killed Bontrager at Virgin Lake.
On July 31, authorities executed search warrants at a pair of residences in Emmetsburg and on three vehicles.
