Emmet County Hunting Accident Injures Teen

(Dolliver)-- A hunting accident during last weekend's pheasant opener in Iowa injured a Dolliver girl.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the 17-year-old girl and her friend were getting ready for the hunt just prior to last Saturday's 8:00 am opener at the Twelve Mile Lake Wildlife Management Area near Estherville. Officials say the girl's friend handed her a 20-gauge shotgun, but neither had a good grip and the gun slipped from their hands. As the girl tried to catch the gun, it went off, striking one of her toes.
She was taken to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville for treatment.
DNR officials say the incident serves as a reminder for hunters to follow standard safety precautions in the field, including having a good grip on guns when handing them off.
