(Okoboji)-It's a Earth Day on Saturday, with a special event on tap at the Dickinson County Nature Center. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The public is invited to a family-friendly event Saturday afternoon to celebrate Earth Day, with a focus on science.
Iowa Lakeside Lab's Education Coordinator Jane Shuttleworth says, the nature walk will begin at the Dickinson County Nature Center. "We'll follow the bicycle trail, we'll go along the prairie, wetland and oak savannah habitat, and along the way, we'll learn about the contributions that science has made. For example, with wetlands, we've learned in the past 20 years wetlands are important for water quality, so science has helped us understand how to use the landscape to filter our water. Then we'll look at the Osprey nest and learn about how some of the scientists figured out how some chemicals are harmful. They were causing extinction of Ospreys and other birds. You could use that scientific knowledge, create new laws, to help our human health and our wildlife. So, we'll be looking at things like that along the walk that kind of combine appreciating nature while also appreciating the role that science plays in making the earth a better place to live and keep people healthy."
A scavenger hunt will be included in the day's activities. The free event gets underway at 1 pm Saturday afternoon.
