Dubuque Band Wins Finals In Iowa Rocks Talent Competition At Arnolds Park
Tue 9-3-2019
(Arnolds Park)-- A band from Dubuque called “Riding Atlas” is the winner of the final round of this year's Iowa Rocks Talent Competition. The competition was held this past Saturday as part of the Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association's Hall of Fame induction weekend at Arnolds Park. Band member Nicholas Dicklin explains how they came up with the name for the group...
"We were actually coming back from the studio down in Nashville and we oddly enough had an atlas in our hands and we we're like oh, that's a cool band name. We had the band name Whitey Blue to start off, we were actually a blues-rock group, and thought we should change up the name a little bit so we came up with Atlas and then thought well, there's already a band named Atlas so let's try to get something a little different, so we thought well, Riding Atlas, since we do a lot of traveling and stuff, so."
Dicklin says they were very excited upon learning they won Saturday's competition...
"It's huge. Didn't expect it at all. A lot of great competitors actually. We had known Ralph for, Ralph Kluseman now, for years and told us about it and it's just a great experience and a great opportunity actually to meet a lot of other musicians and make good connections."
For its winning efforts, the band will receive some recording time at a professional studio. The group also opened the induction concert Sunday evening.
