Driver Of A Car That Collided This (Thurs.) Morning With A Storm Lake School Bus Charged With OWI
(Storm Lake)-- Charges have been filed against the driver of a vehicle that collided with a school bus this (Thurs.) morning in Storm Lake that was carrying students.
Storm Lake police say it happened around 7:30 this (Thur) morning at the intersection of East Lakeshore Drive and 120th Avenue. Officers say 23-year-old Shantara McDonald of Storm Lake was driving a 2005 Chrysler eastbound on East Lakeshore Drive. Police say McDonald lost control while making a right turn and struck the school bus. No injuries were reported.
Police further allege that upon making contact with McDonald on the scene, they detected signs of alcohol impairment. McDonald was transported to the Buena Vista County Jail for further testing, and was ultimately jailed on charges of Operating While Intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor...and Failure to Maintain Control, and No Proof of Insurance, both simple misdemeanors. McDonald was booked and held on a one-thousand dollar bond.
According to a statement released by the Storm Lake School District, another bus arrived to pick up the students soon after the collision, and they were taken to their expected destination in a timely manner. Storm Lake School District staff will be checking in with students that were on the bus throughout today (Thur).
