Driver apparently had Seizure, rolled Vehicle and hit Pedestrian in Spirit Lake on Tuesday

(Spirit Lake)-The Spirit Lake Police Department says an accident on Tuesday morning sent two Spirit Lake men to the hospital, one with multiple severe injuries.

Authorities say that at 10:21 Tuesday morning, 76 year old James Lee Stevens of Spirit Lake was traveling southbound on Peoria Avenue in a 2019 Kia Sorento when he apparently had a seizure and lost control of the vehicle. Stevens left his lane veering into the left, hitting the northbound lane side curb where he then hit a snowbank, a pedestrian, a sign, a rock, a street lamp and rolled his vehicle, which came to rest facing east.

The pedestrian, 46 year old Joseph Aaron Vanveldhuizen of Spirit Lake, was transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare and later airlifted to Sioux Falls.  No word on his current condition.

A police report says Stevens has seizures and allegedly has no memory of the accident.  He was transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare with unknown injuries.

He was charged with Driving While License Denied, Suspended and Serious Injury by Vehicle – Reckless Driving.

Damage to the Kia Sorento was estimated at $20,000. Damage to a sign owned by Dave Kuker Trucking was estimated at $1,000. Damage to a street lamp owned by the City of Spirit Lake was estimated at $2,000.

Peoria Avenue was closed for several hours following the accident.
