Dr. Paula Noble to speak at Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar June 4 (1)
(Okoboji)-The Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar will focus on lake sediments on Tuesday evening, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar on Tuesday will feature a talk by Dr. Paula Noble with the Department of Geological Science and Engineering at the University of Nevada Reno.
Noble says her research focuses on what can be learned about ancient earthquakes by studying lake sediments. "This is something I got into recently as I was working in Central Italy, I started there about 7 years ago and we were actually interested in the interface between climate and humans on the landscape, but then the Central Italy Seismic Sequence occurred and it devastated some medieval towns, changes in the springs around the lakes were evident and we thought, wow, I wonder if we can go back and look at our cores that we had collected to see if there was some evidence of historic earthquakes that we knew occurred going back to medieval times."
Dr. Noble's talk will begin at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Lakeside Lab Campus. It is free and open to the public.
