(Spirit Lake)-Donations are needed for the Backpack Program. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Backpack Program is continuing during the school closures.
Spirit Lake Middle School Counselor Jill Dielschneider says, the program helps students in need. "For the Backpack Program, we run this all year long, and we're going to try to continue it during the school closures. We will be delivering backpacks every Friday to the students that have been on the program all year."
She says donations may be dropped off at the pantry during daylight hours. "We set up a couple of tubs inside the doors on the southwest side of First Presbyterian Church, and anybody that has non-perishable goods can drop them off there for our backpack recipients. We like to encourage donations to be single serve items that students can make on their own. Things that we typically use are easy mac, complete meals, ramen noodles, little fruit containers, little vegetable containers, packs of oatmeal, little boxes of cereal, granola bars, juice boxes or little waters, things like that are typically what we like to include. They're easy for the kids to use and are single serve so they can use them when they need them."
She noted that the Dickinson County ISU Extension website has a number of resource for residents and families in need.
