DNR Not Recommending Swimming Right Now At Emmerson Bay State Recreation Area
(Wahpeton)-- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an advisory recommending people not swim at a popular lakes area beach right now.
Officials say the advisory was issued for the Emmerson Bay State Recreation area on the west side of West Lake Okoboji due to elevated levels of E-coli bacteria.
DNR Environmental Specialist Daniel Kendall says the bacteria doesn't make people sick but he says it can be an indicator of other potentially harmful pathogens.
Similar advisories have been issued for seven other beaches at state parks scattered around the state of Iowa.
