(Larrabee)-- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is trying to find out what's causing the water on a portion of a northwest Iowa stream to look red.

Tom Roos of the DNR's regional field office in Spencer says it received a report of the red color in Bear Creek about four miles west of Larrabee Wednesday afternoon from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Officials say the red color extends about a mile and that it began entering the creek around 5:00 pm.

Roos says field tests showed elevated ammonia levels but investigators did not see any dead fish. He says an investigation will continue, along with efforts to stop whatever it is that's causing the pollution.
