(Okoboji)-It's the annual "Turkey Trot" at the Dickinson County Nature Center on Wednesday, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has the story:
The Dickinson County Nature Center will host the final installments of their Hike the Wild Series for the year with the Turkey Trot on Wednesday, and the Winter Solstice Hike on December 22.
Naturalist Charles Vigdal says the hikes are fun for all ages. "Around the holidays at Thanksgiving and Christmas, we like to more of a slower, more local Hike the Wild to get people outside, and that culminates this year as our Turkey Trot for Thanksgiving and our Winter Solstice Hike in December. So, we go outside, we have fun, we learn about stuff, and then we'll come in the Nature Center and do an activity and also have some snacks, too, so it's going to be a fun, family event - all generations - Grandma, Mom & Dad, the kids, the grandkids, can all come and have fun together and get outside."
He adds that he'll share information regarding wild turkeys in the Iowa Great Lakes. "There are quite a few wild turkeys here in the Lakes Area and we're going to learn about where you find them, what they eat, what their nests look like, some of the history. People don't realize that come the turn of the century, we hunted all the turkeys in Iowa and most of the turkeys we have were imported from other states. They have actually made a come back, they're actually success stories here in the State of Iowa."
Participants should dress for the weather, with the easy hike around the Nature Center and Kenue Park expected to take about 45 minutes.
The Turkey Trot will begin at 3 pm on Wednesday at the Dickinson County Nature Center and is free and open to the public.
