Dickinson County Collision Injures Two

Fri 1-2-2015 []

(Spirit Lake)-- A two-vehicle collision Wednesday on Dickinson County Road M-56 near Eleanor Bedell State Park sent two people to the hospital and resulted in the road being shut down in that area for some time. The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office says Hope Tullis of Spirit Lake was driving a 2009 Jeep Wrangler and had stopped on the east side of the road to deliver mail. Authorities say a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Valoris Johnson of Spirit Lake rear-ended the Jeep Wrangler, causing both vehicles to go into the east ditch. Tullis' vehicle wound up on its side, trapping her inside. She had to be removed with jaws of life equipment.

Both Tullis and Johnson were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with non incapacitating injuries.

Damage to the Jeep Wrangler was estimated at $8,000; the Chevrolet Silverado sustained an estimated $15,000 in damage.

Johnson was cited with failure to stop within the assured clear distance ahead.

The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Dickinson County Emergency Management, the Spirit Lake Fire Department, The Lakes Area Extrication Unit, and the Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and paramedics.

The crash took place shortly after 2:00 p.m.
