Dickinson Co. Supervisors Approve Recycling Contracts

Tue 2-4-2020

(Spirit Lake)-- The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today (Tues.) to approve recycling agreements with several cities, provided they also sign off on them. Supervisor Kim Wermersen says it would give residents in the unincorporated areas of the county somewhere to take their recyclable items to...County Recycling01

"And these contracts are agreements with certain cities within the county that are interested in participating with the county to provide bins for recycling. And so until I get those signed contracts back, I really don't want to mention which communities they are, but we're in the process of coming up with a solution for really what's been a problem here in the county."

Wermersen says the change will also likely impact curbside recycling in those areas of the county where the service is currently available...County Recycling02

"Currently the county is paying to have some subdivisions have their recycling picked up. We have a little issue with that because it's only certain areas that are getting it done, and we're all in this with recycling. So what we're encouraging those areas to do eventually, if these contracts come back signed, is to find a provider that would pick up their garbage and recycling curbside, which is what a lot of the areas are going to any way, and so we would encourage them to look at that option and then we also would have these other areas, hopefully, if signed contracts come back, to have areas that they still could take their recyclables."

Wermersen says they're hoping to hear back from the cities in the next few weeks...County Recycling03

"We're a few months out from this actually happening because the contracts we currently have in place for the curbside that we have, but we've talked with a lot of these in preliminary meetings, so I would think in the next few weeks for sure we would have an answer."

The county was forced to look at new options after the city of Milford discontinued its recycling drop off facility altogether and the city of Spirit Lake shut down it's drop off for plastic, tin and glass.
