Crash On Hwy 9 Near KUOO Studios Sends Three People To The Hospital
(Spirit Lake)-- A two-vehicle crash on Highway 9 on the west edge of Spirit Lake Sunday sent three people to the hospital.
The Spirit Lake Police Department says 22-year-old Beth Van Oort of Lake Park was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic eastbound on Highway 9 near the KUOO studios when she collided with the rear of a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 71-year-old Frank Johnson of Spirit Lake, who had slowed to make a left-hand turn.
Police say the vehicle driven by Van Oort then traveled underneath the one driven by Johnson. Johnson's vehicle then flipped and landed on the passenger side. It then flipped onto its roof as it slid off the roadway. Van Oort's vehicle came to rest about 577 feet east of the intersection.
Both drivers, along with a passenger in Johnson's vehicle, 69-year-old Debra Johnson of Spirit Lake, were all taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare.
Both vehicles were totaled.
Van Oort was cited with failure to stop in an assured clear distance.
The collision took place a little after 11:30 am.
