Crash On Hwy 71 Just South Of Spencer Claims Life Of A Spirit Lake Man
(Spencer)-- A crash this (Mon.) morning on Highway 71 near John Deere just south of Spencer claimed the life of a Spirit Lake man.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office says 66-year-old Jay Wardwell of Gladstone, Michigan was driving a 2017 Volvo semi northbound when he lost control of the rig, which jackknifed. Authorities say 52-year-old Todd Dykstra of Spirit Lake was driving a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country southbound when he collided with the semi trailer.
Dykstra was pronounced dead a short time following the collision; no injuries were reported to Wardwell.
The vehicle driven by Dykstra was totaled; minor damage was reported to the semi.
The collision, which took place around 11:15 am, resulted in Highway 71 being closed in that area for several hours.
The Spencer Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Fire Department, Spencer Hospital ambulance, Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa D.O.T plows and Bud's Service assisted on the scene.
