Fri 9-10-2021

(Spirit Lake)-- As is the case in most places right now, COVID-19 infection rates continue to rise locally. Katy Burke of Dickinson County Public Health has an update on the county's latest numbers...Burke & COVID Update01

"Our seven day positivity rate is 14.1 percent and that's coming from data we can see from the state. And really the number one takeaway I want to talk about is 49 positive tests. So I know the percentage rate can be confusing, but we're looking at 49 positive tests in just that last seven days."

Burke says there are two age groups that seem to be affected the most right now...Burke & COVID Update02

"Our zero to 17 group we are seeing 18 percent, so almost one fifth of the cases are under age 18. And then another group that is ticking up is that 60 to 69 group. That's almost a quarter of our cases."

Burke encourages everyone to continue practicing the various public health mitigation measures, and for those that haven't yet done so, to get vaccinated. Not only for COVID, but also the flu...Burke & COVID Update03

"That is one more thing that we're really encouraging people to be proactive about, to get their flu shot. It is possible to get the flu shot and the COVID shot around the same time."

Burke says it's likely this flu season will be worse than last year...Burke & COVID Update04

"Last year people were masked up and this year, you know, we're seeing higher increases of everything across the board on the respiratory side. So it may be a tough season for us."

Burke reminds everyone COVID vaccination clinics are still being held Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Dickinson County Public Health and at most pharmacies in the area during their normal business hours.
