Collision Of Vehicle & Horse On Hwy 86 On The West Side Of West Lake Okoboji Sends Two People To The Hospital

(Wahpeton)-- Two people were taken to the hospital in a collision Wednesday evening involving a vehicle and a horse at the intersection of Highway 86 and Edgewood Drive on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.

Authorities say 73-year-old David Young of Milford was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox when a horse ran out onto the road. The horse struck the right front of the vehicle, smashing out the passenger side windshield. The horse was flipped up into the air, and landed on the highway.

Young and a passenger in the vehicle, his wife, 72-year-old Barbara Young, also of Milford, were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with non-life threatening injuries.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $26,000; the horse was killed.

The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, Milford Police Department and Milford Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

The incident took place shortly before 8:00 pm.
