Fri 5-29-2015
(Spencer)-- Three people were injured this (Fri.) morning in a collision involving a car and semi tractor-trailer just south of the north junction of Highways 18 and 71, or the North Y in Spencer. The Iowa State Patrol says 34-year-old Aaron Skatges of Dakota City, Nebraska was driving a 2010 Wilson tractor/trailer southbound on Highway 71 and had slowed to make a left turn. Troopers say a second vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet Impala driven by 19-year-old Samuel Van Berkum of Spencer, was also southbound and collided with the rear of the tractor/trailer driven by Skatges. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lanes of the highway.
Van Berkum and two passengers in his vehicle, Benjamin Fox and Kaleb Dandy, both 19 and both of Spencer, were taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. Van Berkum and Dandy sustained incapacitating injuries; minor injuries were reported to Skatges.
$2,500 in damage was estimated to the semi driven by Skatges; the car driven by Van Berkum was totaled.
Authorities say the crash, which took place around 9:30 a.m., remains under investigation.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, Clay County Sheriff's Office, D.O.T Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division, the Spencer Fire Department, Spencer Ambulance and Bud's Service of Spencer.
