Close Call After Boaters Become Stranded On Big Spirit Lake

Sat 4-2-2016 []

(Spirit Lake)-- A close call this (Sat.) morning for several people who became stranded in a boat on the north side of Big Spirit Lake.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department, along with the Arnolds Park Underwater Search and Rescue, were notified around 10:45 a.m. regarding a stalled boat, which at that time was said to be about 1,000 yards off of Miniwakan State Park.

Northwest winds gusting to nearly 40 mph caused the boat to drift to the southeast. It was about 300 yards west of Stony Point by the time rescue crews reached it.

Other than being cold and a little shaken up, officials say there were no injuries to those who were on the boat. Crews safely towed the boat back to shore.

Officials say thankfully the boat didn’t capsize in the high waves, or the situation would have been much worse.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Emergency Management, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Spirit Lake Police Department assisted on the scene.
