City Of Spirit Lake Reminding Property Owners To Make Sure Sidewalks Are Clear Of Snow And Ice

Mon 2-22-2021

(Spirit Lake)-- The city of Spirit Lake is reminding property owners of their responsibility for snow and ice removal from the abutting sidewalks of their property. City Code requires the entire width and length of sidewalks be cleared completely. City officials say even the smallest amount of snow or ice will trigger enforcement of the ordinance. If it isn't removed within 18 hours after the end of a snow or ice event, the city may do it, with the charges being assessed to the property owner.

City officials say the ordinance is intended not only to keep the public, postal workers, meter readers and others safe, but it also could help prevent a liability issue for the property owner. They say they would rather have the public's cooperation rather than enforcing codes.
