Tue 6-4-2019

(Little Rock)-- A child has died after being struck by a pickup Monday about three miles north of Little Rock.

Authorities in Lyon county say 77-year-old Harlan Klaasen of Little Rock was driving a 2016 Dodge Ram westbound on 110th Street and was approaching two UTV's parked on the south side of the road. Klaasen then saw two adults working on a field tile in the south ditch and a young child standing behind the UTV's. Deputies say Klaasen had slowed to 5 to 10 mph. They say as Klaasen's vehicle was passing the UTV's, another young child stepped onto the roadway and was struck by the pickup.

The child, who's name hasn't been released, was transported by ambulance to Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley with life threatening injuries. Klaasen wasn't injured.

Authorities say the mishap took place around 3:45 pm.

The Iowa State Patrol and Little Rock ambulance assisted on the scene.
