(Cherokee)-- Authorities say a standoff in Cherokee ended peacefully when a man who barricaded himself inside a house surrendered to police.

It began around 5:00 Thursday and ended around 11:00 p.m. Authorities evacuated homes that were adjacent to the property as a precaution.

Cherokee County Sheriff Dave Scott says the man was the only one in the house, and had been drinking heavily. Authorities say the man had been served divorce papers, and he was believed to be armed.

The Iowa State Patrol, Cherokee Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. The man, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
