Call Goes Out For Blood Donations During Holiday Season
(Sioux City)-- Officials with the Life Serve Blood Center are hoping plenty of people will take some time out of their busy holiday schedule to donate blood. Claire DeRoin, Community Relations Coordinator for Life Serve, tells KUOO news typically they see a decline in donations this time of year. Complicating matters, DeRoin says, is at the same time they're seeing an increased demand for blood...
"We understand that donors have so many things going on this time of year, ranging from travel because the kids are out of school, or holiday traditions and you have a house full of people. It's also flu season and since we're in the Midwest, who knows when winter weather can strike. So there is a lot of stuff working against Life Serve at this time of year keeping our regular donors away. So we just really wanted to stress the importance of keeping your regular blood donations or if you're a first time donor it would be a great time for you to come in and give it a try. because we really, really need the blood this time of year. 1 in 7 people entering a hospital will need blood and that statistic lasts all year long. Just because our donors are busy, that doesn't mean that the hospitals need less blood. That's why it's so urgent that we get blood donors in the chairs and with their sleeves rolled up giving that gift of life."
DeRoin says they're offering a special incentive to get people to come out to their blood drives...
"Any donor who comes out during the month of December will be eligible to order some really fun festive holiday socks that we have. You just need to hop on our website and you'll have reward points on your account after donating, and you can order those. They're so fun. They're stripes, they've got the snowflakes, reindeer, they also have some blood types on them. It's kind of like our version of the ugly Christmas sweater. We've got the ugly festive holiday socks. So not only are you giving blood and saving lives but also a little extra benefit of those goofy socks."
Locally during the holidays, Life Serve will be holding blood drives December 21st at Rosenboom Manufacturing in Spirit Lake from 12 Noon until 5:30 pm, and at the Milford Community Building Monday, December 26th from 1:00 until 6:00 pm.
Life Serve provides a number of hospitals in the area with blood and blood products, including Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Avera Holy Family in Estherville and Spencer Hospital in Spencer, to name just a few.
