(Storm Lake)-Buena Vista County Sheriff Kory Elston has completed negotiations with the U.S. Marshal's Service to house federal prisoners in the county jail.

Tuesday morning, Elston told the Board of Supervisors the Marshal's Service will pay 75-dollars a day per inmate. He says the only additional expense will be for food and that no additional jail staff will be needed.

The county jail will hold up to 12 federal inmates, ten males and two females. Elson says the county jail, which is a 49-bed facility, is typically 50 percent full.

Holding federal inmates is expected to begin the first part of September.

The Buena Vista County Jail will house inmates awaiting trial. They would then go to the Woodbury or O'Brien County Jail prior to their trial.

Elston says the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office normally will not transport the inmates to trial in Sioux City, although if they do, they will be reimbursed for the expense.

Elson intends to put proceeds from housing federal prisoners into a court house security fund, which would be used for additional cameras in the jail and other safety infrastructure needs.
