Mon 2-25-2019

(Spirit Lake)-- The Big Spirit Lake Watershed is one of eight Iowa watersheds selected to participate in the USDA's National Water Quality Initiative.

The program works with farmers in priority watersheds to improve water quality and aquatic habitats. Qualified producers in the Big Spirit Lake Watershed can receive assistance for installing conservation practices such as no-till cover crops, water and sediment control basins and grassed waterways. The projects are funded through higher than normal payment rates for financial assistance through the Environmental Water Quality Incentives Program, or EQUIP.

Big Spirit Lake is the primary source of drinking water for the city of Spirit Lake.

More information on the program is available by contacting the Natural Resources Conservation Service Office at the USDA Service Center in Spirit Lake.
