Bartender Accused Of Serving Alcohol To An Underage Man Who Later Died In A Crash, Along With A Passenger, Makes Court Appearance
(Spencer)-- A bartender who allegedly served alcohol to an underage man who later died in a car crash, along with his passenger, has pleaded not guilty in the case.
The written plea was entered Monday in Clay County District Court on behalf of 37-year-old Jacoba Knight of Milford. Knight was charged with providing alcohol to an intoxicated person, a misdemeanor.
Knight was arrested June 4th following an investigation into April 26th crash near Dickens that claimed the lives of 19-year-old Alfonso Maldonado of Graettinger and 21-year-old Tephonte Smith of Estherville.
An investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Office revealed the two men had been drinking at Southside Grill in Spencer prior to the crash.
Court documents say Maldonado's blood alcohol content was 0.258 percent; well over the legal limit of .08.
Smith died at the scene of the crash; Maldonado died after being taken to Spencer Hospital.
