(Emmetsburg)-- Authorities are alerting the public of a new mail scam that targets senior citizens. The Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office says it received a report from a woman who received a letter in the mail regarding a purported referendum on Social Security, The letter requested a cash donation or donation by credit card in support of protecting the Social Security Trust Fund. Checks were to be made payable to the Seniors Center and sent to an address in Washington, D.C.

Upon doing some checking, authorities say they learned there is NO such referendum coming up, and that funds are NOT being solicited for that particular purpose by area senior citizen groups. Authorities say the letter should be regarded as a scam, and that if you get one, you should disregard it and throw it away.
