Authorities Investigate Death Of Emmet County Jail Inmate

(Estherville)-- Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Emmet county jail. Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens tells KUOO news 51-year-old Lee Roy Hum of Estherville was found unresponsive in a jail cell shortly after 8:00 a.m. this (Fri.) morning. Martens says jail staff administered first aid, however he says Hum was pronounced dead after being taken a short time later by ambulance to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.    

Hum had been arrested and booked into the Emmet county jail on Wednesday on an outstanding warrant.    

Martens says Hum’s death is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Emmet County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office. Martens says an autopsy was to be performed today (Fri.) at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
