Area Law Enforcement Agencies To Participate In Special Enforcement Project Over 4th Of July

Mon 7-1-2019

(Spirit Lake)-- Law enforcement agencies throughout Iowa will be participating in the national Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign that begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday, July 7th.

Officials say during the 2017 July 4th holiday period, the most recent for which statistics are available, 601 people died in motor vehicle crashes. During that same time they say there were four fatalities on Iowa roads.

The National Highway Safety Administration says 60 percent of those who died in alcohol related crashes were in vehicles with a driver with a blood alcohol content of .15 or greater...almost twice the legal limit of .08

Officials say those planning to celebrate with alcohol over the holiday period should have a designated driver or call a taxi or other rideshare service.
