Area Law Enforcement Agencies Participating In Special Holiday Traffic Enforcement
(Undated)-- Area law enforcement agencies will be participating in a special enforcement project over the holidays. The “Don't Wreck The Holidays” enforcement effort starts tomorrow (Fri.) and runs through January 1st, 2020. It's being offered in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
They'll be keeping an especially close eye out for drunk and drug impaired drivers. The agency says that in 2017, 45 percent of the drivers killed in fatal crashes who were tested tested positive for drugs. They say 885 people lost their lives in traffic crashes involving a drunk driver in December of that same year and that in 2017, one person was killed every 48 minutes by a drunk driver on the nation's roads, even though it's illegal to drive when impaired by alcohol.
In Iowa, 506 impaired drivers were arrested from December 13th, 2018 to January 1st, 2019, and that there were 17 fatal crashes in the state during that same time that killed 18 people. Authorities say four of those fatal crashes involved an impaired driver.
