AP Council Views Conceptual Plans From Imagine Iowa Great Lakes For Beautification Of Lake Street & Promenade
(Arnolds Park)-- Meeting in special session this (Wed.) afternoon, the Arnolds Park City Council was updated on plans by the Imagine Iowa Great Lakes group for Lake Street and the promenade along West Lake Okoboji between the amusement park and West Broadway Avenue. A group of donors has come forth with $10 million for the project to beautify the Iowa Great Lakes Corridor.
Brad Beck of Beck Engineering along with a representative of a Chicago landscape architectural firm outlined the concept to city council members. It includes a proposal to eliminate the curbs along Lake Street; planting new trees, decorative lighting, installation of some ballards, hanging planters, and replacing grass areas along the street with a packed granite surface. Beck says it would give it more of a pedestrian mall type of atmosphere...
"The thing we're trying to be really mindful of, can this be a public street all day every day? Can it be closed down and pedestrian friendly all day, every day? Or realistically can this be a mixture of each depending on the city's wishes?"
The council took no action on the matter at today's meeting. The representatives will report back at a future meeting with further refined plans.
