Another Elk sighting reported

Wed 11-9-2016 []

(Spirit Lake)-- There's been another report of an elk being sighted in the Iowa Great Lakes Area.

KUOO news and officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources received a report this (Wed.) morning from a woman who says she saw the animal swim across East Lake Okoboji in the area of the Narrows. She says the animal got into the water near an island and swam across the lake and back. It then got out of the lake in the area of Elinor Bedell State Park.

Anyone who sees the animal is being advised by the DNR to leave it alone. Any sightings should be reported to the DNR at the State Fish Hatchery in Orleans. The number there is 336-1840.

Officials assume but haven't confirmed whether this is the same elk seen several weeks ago swimming on the west side of Big Spirit Lake.

Steve Reighard, a Conservation Officer for the DNR, tells KUOO news he and other personnel spent the morning looking for the elk in the area of Elinor Bedell State Park. He says they only thing they were able to come up with was a couple of large white tail deer.
