Annual Utility Shut-Off Moratorium Under LIHEAP Program About To End
(Des Moines)-- The extended moratorium for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance program, or LIHEAP, ends this coming Monday, May 13th. The Iowa Utilities Board is reminding customers currently protected from electric or natural gas disconnection under the moratorium to contact their provider to discuss payment options to avoid disconnection that could begin as soon as May 14th.
Under Iowa's winter moratorium law, customers who qualify for LIHEAP or the Home Weatherization Assistance Program are protected from service shut-off from November 1st to April 1st. This year's moratorium was extended statewide by an order from the Iowa Utilities Board due to flooding and severe winter weather.
