(Spirit Lake)-Healthy individuals are encouraged to give blood during the corona virus outbreak, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
With many blood drives canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, The American Red Cross is facing a severe shortage.
Communications Manager Sue Thesenga explains. "The Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage because of the number of blood drives cancelling during the corona virus outbreak. Right now, we need healthy individuals to donate to help patients who are counting on live-saving blood."
She says people can look for donation opportunities online. "To find out if there's a blood donation opportunity near you, all you have to do is go to our website, redcrossblood.org If you put in your zip code, all of the blood donation opportunities in your area will come up, and you can schedule an appointment right online."
She notes that donating blood is a safe process for healthy individuals. "We really want to get the word out that it is a safe process and the need for blood is constant. So, because of this corona virus outbreak, patients are still relying on blood being available when they need it."
