Additional Law Enforcement To Be On Roads Starting Friday And Continuing Through Labor Day Holiday Weekend
(Undated)-- Don't become a statistic. That's the message from public safety officials as we head toward the end of summer and one of the busier travel times.
Law enforcement agencies throughout Iowa and other states will be stepping up enforcement beginning this Friday, August 17th, and continuing through Labor Day, September 3rd. A news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau says they'll be keeping a close eye out for impaired and unbelted drivers. The release goes on to say that there will be zero tolerance for non-compliant drivers.
Officials say there were 10 fatalities in Iowa last year over the three-day Labor Day holiday weekend...the most since 1995. They say four of the 10 fatalities were alcohol-related.
Nationwide over the 2016 Labor Day holiday period, the latest for which statistics are available, there were 433 crash fatalities with 36 percent involving drivers who were drunk.
