A Parking Lot Is At The Center Of A Legal Dispute Between City Of Arnolds Park & New Owner Of Former Okoboji Middle School Site

(Arnolds Park)-- The new owner of the former Okoboji Middle School is taking the city of Arnolds Park to court over terms of an agreement pertaining to a parking lot on the site. It called for the city and school district to split maintenance costs of the lot, owned by the school district. The city requested the arrangement to address a parking shortage.

Terms called for the agreement to be in effect in perpetuity, even if the land was to be sold, and that it could be terminated upon mutual agreement. A renewed agreement was approved by the city and school district in 2019. It included an easement for the parking lot, which had not been present in the earlier agreement.

The suit, which requests a jury trial, contends the easement has devalued the property; that it should be declared legally void; and that Slater should be the sole owner of the parking lot. He's also seeking reimbursement of legal fees and reasonable damage plus interest.

The city's attorney has declined comment on the matter.
