A Long Time Superintendent Of The Spirit Lake Community School District Has Passed Away

(Spirit Lake)-- A longtime Superintendent of the Spirit Lake Community School District has died. Harold Overmann passed away Wednesday evening in Marion, Iowa at the age of 83.
Overmann served as Superintendent of the Spirit Lake schools for 22 years. He retired from the district in 1999, but came out of retirement three times after that to work as Superintendent at several other districts.
During his stint in Spirit Lake, Overmann was named Superintendent of The Year in 1996. He was also the first recipient of the Volvo For Life Award for having brought the first turbine windmill to be used by a school district in the nation. The turbine still stands along with another one that was built since then, just south of the schools on the south side of Spirit Lake.
A funeral mass for Harold will be held at 10:30 am Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. A private interment will be held at a later date at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Spirit Lake.
