The Clay County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to 4110 225th Avenue near Spencer around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19th after getting a report that a domestic assault had taken place there and that a shot had been fired in the residence.
Two deputies from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, two Iowa State Patrol troopers a Spencer police officer established a perimeter around the residence and maintained contact with the reporting party who stated that her husband had assaulted her and fired a shot inside the residence before leaving. The woman was directed from the residence.
Upon further investigation, officers spotted the suspect, David Maurer, in the 2200 mile of 410th Street driving a 1988 Caterpillar tractor. He was taken into custody without incident.
As the investigation continued, authorities learned Maurer had allegedly driven from his property in a 2005 Jeep, travelling north and east before crashing the vehicle in a field, landing upside down in a creek. Authorities say Maurer was able to get out of the wreckage and then drove the tractor toward his residence.
